World Bird Wednesday LXXXVI

Flying the Friendly Skies

I suppose everyone who raises a Dslr to their eye in hopes of capturing a bird in the wild will one day, perhaps in a fit of boredom, level their steely gaze on a dragonfly. I am no different. Chasing bugs to get their pictures is about as strange as I get, as strange as you can get perhaps. Couple that with the fact that dragonfly love is the most complicated and time intensive study one can take on and if your unlucky enough to get hooked on the color, vagaries, and alien good looks of these bugs to boot, you too will be considered one strange bird indeed.
How naked is nature? Sex, death, and the fight for survival are all played out in raw theater. Look carefully and you will see the awful and the sublime living closely and improbably like poorly matched neighbors. When your looking for one, you will sometimes unfortunately find the other.
Case in point. Suzanne and I were finishing up a lovely breakfast out at the Pine river when we spotted a young bald eagle cruising low over the water. When the bird returned a few seconds later we scurried out on the deck and were greeted with the sound of ducks quacking frantically. I grabbed the camera and bolted for the steps leading to the river bank.

I guess it doesn't get much plainer than this. There's a kind of hard truth here that defies any attempt to anthropomorphise goodness, resourcefulness, or courage where it does not belong.
Our eagle did not consume it's catch but dropped it back in the river and flew off in search of a more substantial meal. There is a one legged duckling swimming hard on the Pine river tonight.
Just another random act of survival.

"Come away, O human child: To the waters and the wild with a fairy, hand in hand, for the world's more full of weeping than you can understand."
                                                                               William Yeats

  3. Love your photos! There's no point in sugar-coating nature. It just is. I'm very sorry to hear the end of WBW! It's been a pleasure! Hope to see it back in some form even if it is semi-regular. Take care and enjoy retirement!

  4. Oh, I am sorry to see you placing WBW on a hiatus. Is retirement life too much for you? As for today's photos, I did not realize that was a duckling in the grasp of the young eagle. Yikes! Well, hope all is well with you Springman. I'll have a bird photo ready when you return...hopefully.

  7. I am not disappearing, the Pine River Review goes on.
Strangely, I think WBW for me was a function of a fireman's life, having that time to think and explore the beautiful shoreline of the Great Lakes while I commuted back and forth from Midland to Detroit. WBW is a tribute to all of us who participated. It hurts to close the cover on a good book but... you hold it to your breast for a moment and set it down when it's finished.
I could not have made it without you!

  8. As many dragonflies as I've shot and I've yet to see them mate! Lucky you!! I was sad to see the little duckling find itself in the clutches of the eagle. Hope it survived the ordeal. Great photos!!

  9. In my eyes there is nothing strange or boring chasing Dragonflies. It provides me with a totally different challenge at this time of year when the avian activity dwindles.

Nature is raw and as wildlife watchers I'm sure all of us have witnessed activities that would make many others squeal with disgust but that's the way life is.

It has been an honour to be a part of WBW from the beginning so many thanks Springman for hosting this exceptional site. Best wishes for the future and I'll be keeping my open for some interesting wildlife encounters from The Pine River. Cheers FAB.

  10. Thank you Dave for hosting the best bird meme on the net! It takes an engaged host with good rapport and imagination to get as many photographers and birders on board as quickly as you did with World Bird Wednesday! I will look forward to your blog posts and, if WBW does come back, I will be here. Thanks to you I have met some nice folks and great photographers who I hope to stay in touch with going forward. Enjoy your retirement and happy birding!

  11. I get so excited each Tuesday at noon to check in on your WBW. I am fascinated by your writing and pictures. I have used so many of your facts that you have written about in conversations. Things I probably would have never known about. Like the wrens and so many other things. I'll miss this very much. Thanks for hosting. Maybe I'll put together a grand finale post of my bird shots since I don't have any outstanding for this week.

  12. It's been a great ride, Springman! I have admired your dedication, your stamina and your good humor in your comments on individual blogs. Participating in WBW has been a challenge and has expanded the bird blogging world for me. But above all I have gotten much pleasure from your photos and from reading your stimulating and thought-provoking posts and will continue to follow your blog. Thank you! HB

  13. As much as we like to look away and deny it, the harsh events of nature play out. Why does it bother me to see a duckling grasped in the eagle's beak but not a fish?
I have enjoyed your wonderful photos for many weeks now and it's been a pleasure to add my contributions and see those of others in WBW. All good things must end. Thanks for being such a gracious host.

  18. I am saddened ... your WBW has been my connection to the rest of the world that shares what I love, nature. And your pictures and stories are unmatched. I still hope that someday we will see you published. But, for now, thank you for all you have done for me and the other WBW followers. You will be sorely missed and difficult to replace in the scope of things. Be well ... I hope your departure is for positive reasons and that all is well with you.

  24. yes nature, like all life, has it's trials and tribulations; good days and bad days. Your photos are wonderful and commentary always spot-on Springman. Respecting your decision to change tac for now; I have always so enjoyed your site and what it offered for us keen watchers of nature's bounty. 27. I just found your bird meme a few weeks ago...now you're leaving. That's sad, but I totally understand after reading you've done this for so long. Everyone needs to move on and take on other activities. I do hope you've considered having someone else take the helm and that you will announce it soon. Or that someone has volunteered to continue such a wonderful, friendly atmosphere for us birders!!! [by the way, I took a photo of a dragonfly this past week while out birding]

Know the time I have spent the past few weeks here have been very enjoyable!!! And I thank you for hosting.

  28. Dave, I'm sorry to hear that you are putting WBW on hold!! It has been my absolute favourite meme since I bought my DSLR last September. I'm going to miss your wonderful stories & images, and linking up each week.
86 weeks is a very long time to be hosting a meme and I thoroughly appreciate your dedication to it.
I too chase & photograph bugs. I have posted many different dragonflies over the last 6 months since I captured my first. I'm also obsessed with capturing bees!!
Your images are fantastic as always. I will miss the weekly visit to your blog to marvel at your images and those of others... Kindest regards Springman.

  29. Once again I am thoroughly amazed at your wonderful pictures. I hope by now you are getting used to retirement. More time to get out and about with nature. It took me a long time to get into the swing of it. I felt like I was on an ever-ongoing vacation.
Cudos to the "Prince" He's an awesome player.

  31. I have tried and tried to get a decent dragonfly photo, but yours is GORGEOUS! WOW~someday I'll get one! Interesting about the duckling and the eagle. My new goal is to get a photo of a live owl, not one hit by a car...sigh...

  32. It's been a wild ride, but we will miss you and all the participants, and hope you re-emerge as you did from the ashes of Detroit. In the meantime it would be great if someone has the expertise to keep this wonderful group together in such an efficient manner.

  33. It may make me strange, but I must admit that I am very passionate about photographing, identifying, and researching Odonata. Dragons and Damsels are fave photography subjects of mine. I never claimed to NOT be strange ;-)

You and WBW will be missed. Congratulations on being such a wonderful host for such a great meme for so long.

  34. Me too, me too Misty, and Dave, as you have seen on my blog many times and more to come, once someone can ID my latest find...so far some of the people that always know the ID are stumped. I suggested that maybe I found a Hybrid Ode;'))) Oh my the drama and scenes and your photograph of the Eagle grabbing that duck, whoosh nature at it's best...I expect. I do not eat duck either, so now I wonder, why would an Eagle not think this a suitable meal...I hope someone can help that duck...

  38. Dave, a sad day indeed.
I've missed participating on a few of your recent WBW for various reasons, but always looked in. I've got to know some amazing people through your 'meme'; including yourself.
All the very best to you and yours.

  39. Oh Dave -- I have been on a roadtrip with no bird pictures for a while and just came back to catch up on your writing and pictures.... I am sad that this meme has come to an end, but I respect your need to move on in this new chapter of your life .. and also not have to follow a regular schedule, which is a nice part of retirement after you get used to it.)

The WBW community was much more of a community than some other memes and muchly because of your leadership and caring. (And of course birders are all great people.) I still think you should put your essays into book form. I'm Pine River Review will include your beautiful words as well as pictures and I look forward to your future posts.
A million thank yous for all you've done!!!!!

  42. Dave, I totally missed the final statement under your last image from last week and our mutual friend Theresa shared with me that you had bid the meme farewell. What a pleasure it has been sharing. It took me months to finally get my link right to share with you all, and now gone, for me so quickly. Take good care and I will continue to keep up, as best I can~
